written by<\/span><\/i><\/b>: dr. jacquie jacob, university of kentucky<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n colibacillosis<\/span><\/strong>, also called mushy chick disease and cellulitis,\u00a0is infection by the<\/span>\u00a0escherichia coli<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(e. coli<\/em>) <\/strong>bacteria. this disease affects all poultry as well as wild birds.\u00a0e. coli is the most common bacterial pathogen in poultry. it is spread through fecal contamination of eggs, feed, and water. it is often the cause of secondary infection when the immune systems of birds in a flock are compromised due to another disease, especially mycoplasma.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n clinical signs of colibacillosis include the following:<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n antibiotics can be used to treat infection.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n a vaccine is available for breeders and layers. to prevent infection on your farm or ranch, purchase only mycoplasma-free stock from hatcheries registered with the <\/span>national poultry improvement plan (npip)<\/a> registered hatcheries.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nclinical signs<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
